President Joe Biden is being ripped by his predecessor for creating a “catastrophic border disaster” as the Supreme Court says his administration may have violated federal law by dropping the “Remain in Mexico” program.
“Biden must reinstate Remain in Mexico, one of my most successful and important programs in securing the border,” said former President Donald Trump on Wednesday. “Other State Attorneys General should follow suit and go after every one of Biden’s unlawful border and immigration policies.”
The Supreme Court is refusing to block a lower-court ruling over the Remain in Mexico program. Justices Elena Kagan, Sonia Sotomayor, and Stephen Breyer dissented.
In a statement, the Department of Homeland Security said it regrets that the high court declined to issue a stay. The department said it would continue to challenge the district court’s order.
Trump, who is picking up his attacks against Biden especially as refugees try to get out of Afghanistan, warned against a failure on the Southern Border.
“I created the most secure border in history. Biden has created the single most catastrophic border disaster in history — by far,” Trump said via his SaveAmerica45 email account.
“Biden is destroying America. His policies have created a living national nightmare: he’s surrendered our energy independence, sabotaged the economy, surged violent crime, caved to China, crushed our citizens instead of the virus, created the single greatest humiliation in our history in Afghanistan, stranded thousands of our citizens overseas at the whim of Islamic extremists, and left a wide-open border to deadly drugs, vicious crime, and unlimited illegal immigration at home!” Trump added.
The chaos in Afghanistan is also becoming a major fundraising appeal — on both sides.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi emailed supporters Wednesday night urging them to “band together, have a MASSIVE Democratic fundraising surge, and watch Republicans’ plot completely COLLAPSE.”
She added that if Republicans take back the majority in the House — 220 to 212 — Trump “threatened to run for President.”
Trump is also appealing to “Free Speech Defenders” to donate because they are needed “now more than ever.”
This all comes as the Biden administration has asked refugee aid organizations to prepare to receive and resettle as many as 50,000 Afghans evacuated.
Some could qualify for humanitarian parole — a rarely used discretionary authority that gives people in urgent situations one year in the U.S. to complete their application for more formal programs like asylum, refugee and SIV status, The Associated Press reports.
A senior administration official told the AP Tuesday that Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas is using his parole authority to ensure that those arriving in the U.S. have appropriate legal status.
