MATT: I’M MATT SMITH. RIGHT NOW ON UPFRONT. TRUMP ENDORSES. THE SHAKEUP IN THE REPUBLICAN PRIMARY RACE FOR GOVERNOR. TIM MICHELS IS HERE. Tim: Trump loves winners. He sees we are winning this thing and going to win this thing. Matt: Plus, record HIGH GAS PRICES, INFLATION, AND A NEW JOBS REPORT. THE WHITE HOUSE ECONICOM ADVISOR STANDING BY AS ALL EYES LOOK TO THE MIDTES. RM THEN, DEMANDS FOR GUN REFORM. THE HOUSE PREPARING TO VOTE THIS WEEK. CONGRESSMAN SCT FITZGERALD ON HIS NO VOTE IN COMMITTE E. AND A CULTURE WAR IN KIEL. THE BOMB THREATS, THE SCHOOL INVESTIGATION WHAT’S NEXT FOR A RATTLED COMMUNITY IN THE NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT? ? >>ak ting on the issues important to Wisconsin. This is upfront. Matt: Hi, everyone, thanks for joining us. I’M MATT SMITH. TWO MONTHS TO GO AND A MAJOR SHAKEUP THIS WEEKE. ND TIM MICHELS RECEIVING THE ENDORSEMENT OF FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP IN THE REPUBLICAN PRIMARY FOR GOVERNOR. MICHELS RISING ABOVE FORMER Lieutenant Governor REBECCA KLEEFISCH, KEVIN NICHOLSON, AND REPRESENTATIVE T IM RAMTHUN. WE TALKED WITH MICHELS JUST HOURS AFTER RECEIVING THE ENDORSEMENT FRIDAY AT HIS WEST ALLIS CAMPAIGN OFFI. CE >> my phone rang and lo d an behold it was President Trump. I was kind of hoping we wod ul get the call and all the candidates have been coveting this endorsement, so we a re pretty excited when e th phone rang, had a nice conversation witanh d for three or four numites. He said I knew from the fit rs time I met you you are the guy that could win this thing. To be Tony Evers. Trump los vewinners, ss ee we are winning this thing and that we will win this thing. Had a great conversation and it was fun but it does not change anything we’re doing on the campaig n. We are working on everyday, marching forwa, d rd getting an astounding response out of campaign trai l. Matt: Does this solidi fy and make it a two-way race between you and Rebecca Clayn?to Tim: I like Rebecca, I like Catton, and I like Tim as well. I think they’re alfil ne people. I will not worry about what they are doing. I would just focus on what we’re doing here. Matt: Is the Former President going to campaign for you in Wisconsin? Tim: He didn’t say whether he was going to come to Wisconsin or not. I did not ask him, don’t think it was my least ask m. He will make up his own mind. Matt: Would that help you if you came? Tim: We will certainly welcome him. If President Trump wants to th row further support for . Any President of the United States wants to further your campaign, you welcome . ur campaign, you welcome Matt: They talked about the reviews oningog in states like Wisconsin, and did u yo do this in anticipatn io oriented attempt I getting the endorsement? Tim: It has nothing to do with that. I’m a businessman anI’m d always analyzing and always looking at how can we make things better. If we have a division and Michels or it’s failing, we will look at that and say what is the best wayo tlook at that. I did my homework and I realized it was unsalvageable. We wilcol me up with something better and improv. ed We have to have open and fair elections in Wisconsin and we will do tha t. Matt: Do you believe the 2020 election was stol? en Tim: A lot of peopleave h questions about the 2020 elections and so do I. Gotta make sure it does t no happen again. Whether you are Republican or independent or Democrat, every American has to embrace our elecons tiare fair, open and honest area it’s one of the first things I will do as governor, work with the legislature, make sure these loopholes out there are closed, everyone has to have confidence in the election system. When I joined the military I took an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States. Our whole constitutional system will come crumbling down if we do not have fair, open, and honest elections. Matt: Other Republican leaders said there m hayave been issues with how the election was administered and it was not stolen d there was widespread fraud. Tim: I think what everyone is confident of is there was problems with the election. Nobody is sure what e th extent of it was. All we can do is make sure it does not happen agai n. Matt: Does the secretary of state run elections in district run pla? ns Tim: No, they don’ t. We will come up with a gatre plan to show how we do that. Matt: You mention violence in Milwaukee and theun g debate with Risa mass shootings. Would you sign any legislation as governor that would expand our contract Tim: Guns are big issue in every election cyclendy a heart and prayer goes outot all of the victims of the recent shootings. Something has to change, but I believe it is a societal probl. We have to have people that are afraid of law enforcemen t. I think the big surge in crime in the last two years is a byproductf othe whole defund t polheice movement and bad guys, if you will, our thinking I can get away with the stuff now. When I’m governor, I will crackdown on c. ri I will let everybody in law enforcement know it is OK to do your b. It is OK to enforce the law. Matt: Do you support any expansion of back on checks in theta ste? Tim: As a businessman, wt ha we do is we look at all of t he issues on the table. I will not be sworn in as governor until Janry. ua At that time, I will bring in all the proper people, we will look at all the issues. A gun has never jumped up and shot itself in anybody. Matt: Abortion coulde handed back to states to Wisconsin omfr an 1849 l. aw Would you sign? Republican speaker Voss said he wod uladd exceptions for rape and ce. in Tim: I am pro-life, anI d believe we have to protect the unborn. There are two victims when you have an abortion, the unborn baby and then there is the mother, rect en mother that will have to carry that baggage the rest of her life. Science has proven tt hais the case. The 1849 law is an exact mirror of my position and my position is an exact mirror of the law as well which has an exception for life of the moth. er Matt: But you would not support exceptions f rape and interest? Tim: That’s right. Matt: How big is this endorsement? >> it doesn’t seal the deal terms of winning theOP G nomination but creates a better avee nufor taking it away from Kleefisch. Just the endorsement by itself is not enough for Michels to w. He has to use it wisely. Case in point, Michael’s had an ad up on immigration. He recut that quickly after an endorsement to add in the Trump backing. That is marked by it, shows, he has to tell people y he Trump is behind me, I’ve got his support. Matt: The Calais fish campaign new this endorsement was coming. I think I calculated about seven minutes teafr the endorsementht at they came out with their statement. What do you make of her response and what does this do to her campaign >> she is still one of the front runners and that has not changed. Michael’s is because of his money and clay fish with his connection to the base. We saw have two frontrunners, clay fh is because of her connection to the base and Michels because of his pocket book. Now he has this added Trump endorsement to go thers money in Clay still has the base suppo. rt They’re still a three to one advantage for Michels since he under the race over Clay fh.is Even though he is running the ads, Clay fish shows her maintaining and building on her level of support with the GOP ba. se The question is what will Michael’s due contra st pads or go negative. One person is negative and one persons contrast but besides the point, at some point Michels has to take this away. How does he do tha t? Matt: That will keep us talking for the next couple weeks. Thank you. >> atiny. me Rick: Up next, RECORD GAS PRICES, INFLATION, AND A NEW JOBS REPORT. THE WHITE HOUSE ECONOMIC STANDING BY IN WASHINGTON. Plus the gun debate,
