Trump acolytes win primaries for down-ballot state offices

Nevada Republicans shied away from more moderate alternatives Tuesday and embraced a candidate who wants to imprison women who have abortions, an election denier, and a self described “Lady Trump.”

Election results for Nevada’s primary races trickled in late Tuesday, but voters had clear preferences early in the count for a number of far-right candidates.

Jim Marchant, who has garnered national attention for his full-throated commitment to Trump and false narratives surrounding alleged election fraud , won the Republican nomination for Secretary of State.

Marchant has been labeled an “election denier” by States United Action, a nonpartisan group tracking the trend nationally.

In Nevada the secretary of state is the top elections official and is responsible for overseeing elections and certifying their results, making his role as a vocal spokesperson for promoting false voter fraud allegations especially significant.

He will now face Democrat Cisco Aguilar, a former staffer for Sen. Harry Reid, the sole Democrate running for Secretary of State.

Incumbent Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske, who is termed out of reelection, is a Republican that Marchant sued in an attempt to overturn his 5-point loss to Democratic U.S. Rep. Steven Horsford in 2020. The case was thrown out.

GOP treasurer race

Las Vegas councilwoman Michelle Fiore won the Republican primary for Nevada treasurer on Tuesday and will face Democratic first-term incumbent Treasurer Zach Conine in the November general election.

The self described “Lady Trump” first launched a campaign for governor in a crowded Republican primary, but chose not to file after Trump’s team asked her to step down.

Fiorie’s campaign for treasurer was less active than her months-long run for governor, and even less so since she suffered a concussion and several broken bones from a car crash in a BMW sport sedan last month, but the outspoken Trump supporter still won by a landslide in the primary.

The person in charge of Nevada’s treasury is responsible for maintaining and investing every tax dollar that comes into state coffers. Their choices impact the state’s ability to borrow money at favorable interest rates, and the overall cost of a public project.

Fiore’s history in Nevada politics includes a number of financial controversies, including “ at least $91,000 in undisclosed tax liens” and a recent FBI investigation into her campaign finances, first reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal last year. Whether her financial past hurts her chances in the general among more moderate voters remains to be seen.

GOP attorney general race

Nevada Republicans chose Sigal Chattah, a civil and criminal attorney who says she wants to imprison women who have abortions, as their candidate for the general.

The first time Republican candidate will now face incumbent Democrat Aaron Ford in the November general election.

Chattah has also denounced what she sees as government overreach. Chattah, along with failed Republican gubernatorial candidate Joey Gilbert, unsuccessfully challenged the mask mandate in Clark County schools. During the pandemic, Chattah also successfully challenged Sisolak’s restrictions on church attendance, arguing they violated the First Amendment and singled out places of worship.

Lieutenant governor results

With a large lead in Clark County Tuesday night, Las Vegas City Councilman Stavos Anthony is likely on track to win the Republican primary for the Lieutenant Governor.

In an interview last month, Anthony said he would use his role as lieutenant governor and as presiding officer of the state Senate to try and eliminate the state’s permanent vote by mail system established in 2021, and push for voter ID laws in the state.

Anthony will now likely face Democrat Lisa Cano Burkhead, who won her party’s primary Tuesday night after being endorsed by several labor unions including the Culinary union.

Cano Burkhead was appointed as Nevada’s lieutenant governor by Gov. Steve Sisolak in December after the previous lieutenant governor, Kate Marshall, left for a job in the Biden administration. Prior to Cano Burkhead’s appointment, she served as the principal at Foothill High School for six years, a school in Henderson with high minority enrollment. She worked as a teacher and school administrator for more than two decades before leaving to start a consulting business.

The lieutenant governor’s duties include presiding over the part-time state Senate when the Legislature is in session, serving as the vice chair of the Department of Transportation, and chairing the state Commission on Tourism. The lieutenant governor also serves as a member of several other boards and committees in the state, including the Board of Economic Development and the Audit Committee.

Beyond that, the lieutenant governor is first in the line of succession to governor, if the governor is unable to serve due to death, disqualification or resignation.
