Butler fears energy crisis will trump climate action this year

Visiting professor Nick Butler from King’s College London told a major energy industry gathering on Monday that the energy crisis in Europe and the war in Ukraine have split up a well-functioning energy market and will overshadow coming international climate talks.

At the ONS energy conference in Stavanger, moderator Alice Baxter of Equinor asked what Butler thought the energy crisis would do to climate policies.

“COP27 is just around the corner in Egypt, and what has happened in the meantime since the last COP, none of us could have predicted – so I wonder, Nick, what could possibly be achieved in this next COP, in light of all that has happened since Glasgow?” she asked.
