“The ‘tropical Trump,’ as he is affectionately called, has done a great job for the wonderful people of Brazil,” he said in a message through his social network Truth Social.
Trump recalled that during his time in the White House the far-right leader held constant conversations with him in search of tax and customs cuts as well as trade negotiations or strengthening anti-drug and border policies “to put ‘the bad guys’ in jail.”
“President Bolsonaro loves Brazil above all else. He is a fantastic man and has my full and complete support,” he concluded in the message.
For the upcoming elections, Bolsonaro is at a disadvantage in the polls with a voting intention of 31% against 44% of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who is the favorite so far.
Lula challenged this Thursday Bolsonaro’s candidacy for the elections of next October 2 under the accusation of “abuse of political and economic power”.
He requested the Superior Electoral Court to declare the current president “ineligible”, based on the behavior of Jair Bolsonaro during the celebrations of the Bicentennial of the country’s Independence from Portugal on Wednesday.
